“In half a minute Mrs. Cratchit entered—flushed, but smiling proudly—with the pudding, like a speckled cannon-ball, so hard and firm, blazing in half of half-a-quartern of ignited brandy, and bedight with Christmas holly stuck into the top.”
–from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Despite what its moniker might suggest, figgy pudding does not always contain figs, nor is it a pudding in the American sense. Instead, it is a steamed, cake-like dessert, with a consistency and density like that of fruitcake. This traditional dish has origins that trace back to medieval England. It is believed to have evolved from earlier recipes, with its roots in the 14th century when it was referred to as "fygey," a dish that included figs and/or other dried fruits, nuts, honey, and spices. Some of the more traditional variations have included breadcrumbs, meat, and vegetables. From its beginnings as a complete meal that was geared towards sustenance and eagerly consumed during the cold, dark days of an English winter, it has evolved, beginning in the 18th century, into the iconic dessert immortalized in song and story.
Charles Dickens played a significant role in the popularization of figgy pudding through his classic tale, A Christmas Carol. First published on December 19, 1843, the story evokes the image of the Cratchit family gathered joyfully around the table, faces and hearts aglow with warmth and the spirit of the season. Throughout the years, numerous rousing choruses calling for figgy pudding during the course of holiday caroling reflect its significance as a continuing symbol of festive generosity, as family and friends contribute to its enduring legacy. Today, there are a variety of modern twists on this beloved classic. In November 2022, Hormel Foods introduced its own unique, limited-edition holiday product: Figgy Pudding Spam.
