Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, is a day where we come together to collectively celebrate the special people who fill the role of Mom in our lives.
Moms and Mother figures deserve a lifetime of praise every day but, alas, we have one official day every year to express our gratitude to those who have risen to the rank of Mom in our lives.
How did Mother’s Day in America come to be? We can thank Anna Jarvis and her persistence during Woodrow Wilson's presidency in the early twentieth century.
After the passing of her beloved mother, Ann Jarvis, in May 1905, Anna wished to memorialize her mother’s legacy and acknowledge the challenges she endured while raising her 13 children. Facing family tragedy and disease prompted Ann Jarvis to passionately advocate for better healthcare conditions for newborns and mothers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Ann’s last request to her daughter was that she would like all mothers to be honored with their own holiday. After seeing how dedicated Anna was about her mother’s selfless work and special last request, President Woodrow Wilson decreed in 1914 that the second Sunday of May would officially be designated as Mother's Day. We have celebrated ever since.
Mother's Day is a significant day to honor those incredible individuals full of unconditional love, courage, sage advice, and constant support; those who have taken on a job that is always on call and never-ending.
Ever in continuous demand between scraped knees, dinners, carpools, bedtime stories, and calls in the middle of the night, the Moms in our lives have more than earned some time to relax.
While fresh flowers are always lovely, Mom would especially enjoy a delicious beverage to sip on while admiring all those beautiful blooms on her day.
