Yunnan Zi Juan Congou

5 star average rating

This unique black tea offering, “Zi Juan,” meaning “purple beauty,” originates from a purple bud varietal that was developed at the Menghai Research Station in Yunnan province. The purple-brown leaves have been loosely rolled and produce a dark amber liquor with a pronounced stone fruit aroma. The cup is smooth and sweet with a jammy/juicy character that hints of red wine. A suggestion of almond/nutty nuances leads to a clean finish.

  • Wonderful surprise. Never had a Yunnan like this. From the bag you would think it's an "in-between" Darjeeling by its fresh-cut-grass aroma. Then, the brew even hints a bit of a fruity Oolong. Yet, somewhere you'll get just an almost undetectable hint of smokiness, smooth enough to make you wonder about how was this tea made. Lingering finish.

  • This is a really aromatic tea that is a great self-drinker and afternoon tea. This is best drunk 'western style' with a single infusion that steeps for a few minutes, rather than gong fu or repeated infusion ("grandpa style") I found it looses it's aroma and flavor very quickly and isn't really suitable for multiple infusions. Very nice though.

  • My favorite black teas are almost exclusively Keemuns, but this description was intriguing enough that I ordered a sample. Wow! Totally unlike any black tea I have tasted - to my palate, more floral than red wine, almost like an Oolong. Wonderful, but too subtle to be a regular cup with breakfast. Savor with a scone or pastry. Worth the price.
