Upton's Favorites

We’re passionate about tea and love every opportunity to share that passion with our customers. Below is a list of our favorite teas, along with our cupping notes and a little bit about ourselves and our tea experiences. Enjoy!

KAREN
Since the early 70s, I have always loved to drink breakfast style teas with milk, no sugar. When I first came to Upton Tea in 1995 and started to discover the depth and variety of fine loose leaf tea, I found myself drawn to the teas I could drink plain - the refined Darjeelings, the spicy Oolongs, the clean greens and the delicate whites. I still enjoy a rich black tea for breakfast most of the time and then move on to lighter bodied teas for the rest of the day. I do love the taste of tea but it is the aroma that I find uplifting and inspiring!

Uva Special Tea
TC51: A refreshing character distinguishes this classic selection from Uva region in southeastern Sri Lanka. The cup has a lively aroma with hints of mint. Wintergreen notes accentuate the bright flavor of the dark-amber liquor.

Organic Oolong Choicest
ZO92: From the Huangshan mountains in southern Anhui province, this organic offering is crafted in the style of an Oriental Beauty (Bai Hao) Oolong. The amber cup is velvety smooth with a pronounced honey note in both the aroma and flavor. The honey sweetness accentuates flavor notes of stone fruit and a lingering hint of flowers.

AnHui Green Huangshan Mao Feng
ZG53: Produced in An Hui province, this classic green tea yields a smooth, complex cup. The flavor profile has a note of steamed peas, with hints of popped corn. This tea is one of China's "Ten Famous Teas", a traditional list containing what was purported to be the best teas produced in China long ago.

REBECCA
I confess to starting out with strong coffee from the time I was old enough to drink it. The occasional cuppa served well as a comfort beverage. It was not until 2002 and at the insistence of converted family members that I began to make the transition to loose tea. Made easier, I suspect, by the aid of some good Pu-Ehr and Assam teas. Today I still favor the strong cups but have vastly expanded my range thanks to the education I've received over the years from fellow staff members and Upton customers.

Season's Pick Earl Grey Creme Vanilla
TE01: A classic Earl Grey, accented with vanilla and cream flavors. This delightful variant will appeal to most Earl Grey enthusiasts.

Gen-Mai Cha
TJ21: Literally, Gen-mai Cha means brown rice tea. Toasted and partially puffed rice is blended with large-leaf Sencha.

Lapsang Souchong Black Dragon
ZS90: Blended especially for Upton Tea Imports, this tea is a pleasing and subtly complex variation on a rich, smoky classic. The perfect gift for the Lapsang Souchong drinker who seeks a less smoky cup.

JESSE
I became interested in tea in 2007 when I first started working at Upton Tea Imports. In the beginning I was mostly interested in Pu-Erh teas. I had always been a coffee drinker and I gravitated towards mellow earthy flavors, but over time my tastes changed along with what I looked for in a cup. These days I find the oolong aromas inspiring and I am always excited to try a new Keemun. I'm hard pressed to decline a first flush Darjeeling, however I prefer the toastiest of the second flush offerings when they are available.

Formosa Jade Oolong Imperial
TT89: The finest Jade Oolong that we have ever sampled. Those who are looking for the best of what Taiwan can produce will want to try at least the sample size (12 grams).

Yunnan Golden Monkey Select Organic
ZY84: An abundance of downy, golden tips provides a beautiful contrast to the dark brown leaves. The coppery-amber cup is smooth and sweet with a toasty, biscotti-like fragrance. Layers of honey, caramel and wine are found in the complex flavor, which finishes with a whisper of cocoa.

Keemun Mao Feng
ZK97: This exemplary Keemun offering has an intensely rich character with a pronounced cocoa note in the aroma as well as the flavor. The long, twisted leaves produce a bright copper cup with a thick mouth feel and sweet toasty notes.

NICOLE
My budding adoration for tea started when I ran a café in my late teens and early 20s. Joining Upton Tea I realized the world of tea was endless. From the Himalayas to the tea fields of Japan to the gardens of Sri Lanka and beyond, there is so much to try and learn. You can taste the terroir in the steeped leaves and I find the aromas to be enthralling. The hard work and dedication it takes to create each and every kind of tea is amazes me. To me a cup of tea is a cup of joy.
Sharing tea is probably my favorite part of my job. We see thousands of samples a year, each one of our teas is handpicked to share with the world. My go-to is usually China tea, you can’t go wrong with dark, earthy Yunnan or sweet, smooth Yin Zhen white tea. I also enjoy a nice floral Taiwanese oolong to brighten my day. My main focus at Upton is to bring you the best teas the world has to offer and continue the tea journey.
“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves - slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future.” ― Thich Nhat Hanh

Yunnan Black Dragon Pearls
ZY75: Large, dark brown leaves have been carefully rolled into uniform pearl shapes to create this unique offering from Yunnan province. Both the dry pearls and the infused liquor are fragrant with the scent of chocolate, hinting of its delicious flavor. The golden-amber cup is rich and earthy with notes of sweet cocoa and hints of stone fruit. The finish is smooth and lingering.

China Oolong Choicest Organic
ZO92: From the Huangshan mountains in southern Anhui province, this organic offering is crafted in the style of an Oriental Beauty (Bai Hao) Oolong. The amber cup is velvety smooth with a pronounced honey note in both the aroma and flavor. The honey sweetness accentuates flavor notes of stone fruit and a lingering hint of flowers.

Organic White Silver Needle
ZW90: This special production is composed entirely of unopened leaf buds. The cup has a delicate, sweet aroma. The light liquor is refreshing with a sweet hint and and a lightly nutty/fruity finish. An outstanding organic white tea.
