  About :

Since the early 70s, I have always loved to drink breakfast style teas with milk, no sugar. When I first came to Upton Tea in 1995 and started to discover the depth and variety of fine loose leaf tea, I found myself drawn to the teas I could drink plain - the refined Darjeelings, the spicy Oolongs, the clean greens and the delicate whites. I still enjoy a malty, rich Assam with milk for breakfast but then move on to lighter bodied teas for the rest of the day. I do love the taste of tea but it is the aroma that I find uplifting and inspiring!

    1. TT54 :  Special Production Formosa Black Tea

A very unique black tea from Taiwan called "Sun Moon Lake tea". The enormous twisted leaves have a wiry appearance, reminiscent of a Keemun Mao Feng. The tea is silky smooth without a trace of astringency. The taste is full and somewhat malty, reminiscent of a very smooth Assam tea. Notes of nutmeg and cinnamon are present with a whisper of mint in the finish.

    2. ZJ91 :  Organic Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearl

I love watching the pearls unfurl as they steep. They remind me of little sea creatures reaching their legs out of their shells. This is a great tea to enjoy in a teacup or bowl with an interesting pattern or texture on the inside because the liquor is so pale. The aroma is delicately floral and not overly "perfumey". The taste is sweet jasmine, smooth and subtle.

    3. ZJ98 :  Jasmine Downy White Pekoe

A white tea is scented with jasmine blossoms to create the ethereal beauty of this tea. Early in the springtime, tea buds are gently plucked from the tea bushes. These buds are so new that they are still covered with the white down of the just emerged growth. They are newly born. The tea buds are dried and then heated to halt the oxidation process that would turn them dark. The delicate herbaceous quality of the white tea blends perfectly with the jasmine.

    4. ZK54 :  Fujian Province Yin Lan Zao

A large leaf that is rolled into curl shapes, it is usually a leaf used to make Oolong tea. The tea master decided to produce a black tea, however, and the leaf was oxidized more to produce a lovely tea whose leaves unfurl into strands of ribbons. As I take my first sip, the warm, toasty aroma fills my senses. The warmth comes through in the rich flavor with spicy flavor notes reminiscent of nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon. This is a real treat!

    5. ZO82 :  Floral Tie-Guan-Yin Superior

Aromatherapy in a cup. Inhaling the aroma of this tea brings memories of that first moment in late spring when you are standing by an open window and the breeze brings in the heady scent of lilac to fill your senses. The leaves are intensely green, especially after steeping, and rolled into curled shapes during processing. This tea is lightly oxidized making it more like a green tea, with vegetal notes in the flavor. The lilac fragrance bursts its sweetness in my mouth with each sip.

    6. ZW85 :  Fuding White Treasure Organic

The green look of the wet tea leaf after steeping foreshadows its vegetal aroma and taste, much like that of a very fine green tea. To me, the difference lies in the soft delicacy of this tea, a gentle treasure. I find this tea much lighter in taste than a green tea. It also has a whisper of sweetness that lingers in the smooth finish.

This tea has a gorgeous silvery green leaf covered with fine downy white hairs. The liquor is a muted yellow and feels sweet and silky on the tongue. The taste is mildly vegetal with light fruity, toasty notes. There is a also a suggestion of cocoa in the aftertaste. The aroma is warm and comforting.
